Hindu schools in Ceylon

THERE is a considerable colony of Hindus living in Ceylon, which is mainly populated by Buddhists. A new and unforeseen difficulty is reported to have arisen in the case of schools started for the education of Hindu children according to their religious tenets. The Government Agent in the Eastern Province has issued a notice to all Government officials forbidding them from taking an active part "in the promotion of the interests of one religion in the matter of education at the expense of the interest of another." This will prevent subordinate Hindu and Buddhist officials from taking steps to have their children educated according to their own religion. But in practice it is said this affects Hindus largely. The local paper, which is edited by a Buddhist, strongly protests against this interference with the rights of the Hindus to educate their children according to their religious beliefs.
