India''s contribution to the war

SOME of our Anglo-Indian contemporaries are not satisfied with contributions which India has been making towards the war in men and money. Two hundred thousand fighters, trained and equipped, six millions sterling in money towards the expenses of the Expeditionary Forces, the magnificent contributions made by our princes in coin and kind and the ceaseless flow or private charity for relief of distress-these and others are nothing to at least one paper in the ex-capital of India, and it thinks only of a war budget on a peace footing. We really doubt whether illogically and perversity can go further. It is forgotten that India is not going to ask the Home Government for accommodation in respect of its loan as the colonies have done. It is also forgotten that we are willing to stand on our credit in England and to trust our won public spirit in India for raising loans. Surely, the Calcutta paper should not forget the fact that out of the British War Loan of £275 million a sum of £38 million is to be lent to the self-governing colonies and that these colonies pay no higher rate of interest than the Home Government does.
