Indian Ladies and the War.

AT the public meeting that was held at Town Hall, Bombay, the outstanding fact that was brought to light was that the women of India were not less interested in the prosecution of the war to a successful end than the men. It is perfectly clear from the facts given and sentiments expressed by the several lady speakers that the ends for which liberty loving England had unsheathed the sword are as dearly cherished by the womanhood of India as by her manhood. His Excellency made special mention of the enthusiastic devotion with which all classes for the ladies had worked for the success of the Relief Fund. A solitary English lady had herself cut out 2,000 garments, and a solitary Mahomedan lady without any desire to outshine her European sister went quietly stitching garments till the number had reached 6,000 in less than 12 months. Others engaged themselves in knitting innumerable socks and comforters and not a few went on supplying chutnies, pickles and other dainties "prepared with their own hands." Few can realise what his upheaval inside purdah really signifies.
