Only 6 Per Cent?

THE cost of living in England is rising and the Board of Trade has appointed a Committee to enquire into the causes and to suggest remedial measures. The cost of living in India has also been rising, though the committee appointed some time ago led to no practical remedy. Since the war, however, the high prices have led to a higher mortality owing to the less prosperous condition of the poor. But the official statisticians say that the rise has only been 6 per cent. Thousands of poor people with a fixed income have had to deny themselves some portion of the necessaries of life, and nothing is more misleading than to say that the prices in India have only gone up by 6 per cent
