Poor Law in India

IN no part of India, so far as we know, is there is poor law in the sense in which the poor may claim the protection of society under certain conditions. But it is apparent that the spirit of the charity in the people is undiminished and the really poor and deserving are helped in various unostentatious ways by individuals. The only thing to be regretted is the misdirection of charity and the frequency of fraud practiced upon the unwary. Under these circumstances, the most appropriated plan is said to be before the State to pass a poor law and make it obligatory for each town to maintain its poor, and prevent the practice of deception arising from unseemly and misapplied forms of beggary. We are glad to hear that H.H. the Maharaja of Indore has just appointed Prof Naik. Of the Holkar College to study the conditions of the poor in the State and draft a Poor Law suited to local conditions.
