Sinking of the “Bengali” hospital ship

The report of the sad and sudden disaster which has overtaken the “Bengali” Hospital river steamer, on her luckless maiden voyage to the proposed scene of her activities will be received with profound regret not only in Bengal but all over the country. The unlucky steamer was christened amidst great enthusiasm at the Prinsep’s Ghat, Calcutta, on the 8th of May, only a fortnight back, by Lord Carmichael, and the greatest hopes were entertained of a useful and beneficent career in the service of the sick and wounded soldiers in Mesopotamia. His Excellency the Governor, in his thrilling speech on the occasion, referred to an indissoluble bond being created between the people of Great Britain and those of India by the war and exhorted the youngmen who were undertaking the duty to show that they had the clearest sense of patriotism.
