COMMENTING on the order issue on the 3rd instant by the Madras Government regarding the restrictions placed on college students in attending political meetings, the Hindu points out that the whole responsibility being now thrown on the principals of colleges, the question is how the latter should act if they have to satisfy the Government and the public at one and the same time. The Government adheres to its policy of non-participation of students in politics of non-participation of students in politics but admits that the restrictions on the attendance of under-graduate at political meetings were unduly rigid. Obviously Government expects that Principals should exercise their discretion in a liberal spirit, but we do not see how this can be done when the previous order of the Government is not modified in specific terms. The Government of Madras expects the heads of colleges to carry out the wishes of the Government expressed in the original order and at the same time allow some relaxation of the restrictions originally placed on under-graduate students in attending political meetings.
