THE Bengalee announces that Sir Lawrence Jenkins, the Chief Justice of Bengal, will relinquish office in August and will not resume it after the vacation. His retirement has naturally given anxiety to the public who hold the Chief Justice in highest estimation on account of the stern independence and high ideal of justice he maintained during his term. In times of excitement and passion the Bengal High Court maintained the high traditions of even handed justice and refused to be served by prejudices. The Bengalee rightly says that “when the history of the times in Bengal comes to be written, to Sir Lawrence Jenkins will be assigned an honoured place as being one of the pacificators of Bengal in the most exciting time in the modern history of Bengal.”
