The London correspondent of the Englishman says that the Rhodes Trustees have received quite a large number of applications form Belgians, Serbians, Italians, the French and the Russians to benefit from the annulment of the German scholarships, but that the Trustees have for them an “obvious reply” that they will have no claim on the benefaction “while the most populous portion of the British Empire remains outside the scheme.” It is also stated that Mr. Chamberlain has made out a very strong case for India and that the Trustees are favourably impressed by it. To what extent India will benefit in this respect from the widened “angle of vision” remains to be seen. India was coldly left out of the scheme by Mr. Rhodes, although he was an enthusiastic supporter.
