The Teaching of German

ONE interesting but difficult subject that was discussed at various meetings of educational societies in London in January last was the present and future of teaching foreign languages-especially German, in secondary schools. It is recognised that two or three European languages should be learnt by one who wants to succeed in any profession, and owing to the dangerous character of German culture and the future of German relationship, it is by no means easy to decide whether British children should continue to learn the German language. It was explained that the isolation of Germany and the German language would not succeed; and a short time after the war Germans themselves would come in large numbers to England speaking the English language and exercising all methods known to them of capturing English trade. Germany would certainly not abandon the study of the English language. It was, therefore, resolved that the teaching of German language in England must continue. With a better knowledge of German, everybody in England would have known what was coming. The study of languages, therefore, will continue without detriment to the relationship between nations and States.
