The "Vernacular" Press in India.

MR. A. Rangaswami Iyengar, Editor of the Swadesha Mitran, (Madras) is reported to have stated in a recent lecture that journals published in Indian languages were subject to greater disabilities than those which were published in English. These journals, he said, were more hard up for "copy" and has to write or translate everything in the office. For all these troubles they were subject to stronger official suspicion and that was not very encouraging to that the section of the Indian press. If difficulties were greater, he said, their influence was far more useful in developing sounder public opinion. We do not wholly share Mr. Iyengar's views about the difficulties of writing or preparing copy. There may be less clipping which lightens work elsewhere, but writing makes for efficiency. We do not underrate difficulties or responsibilities.
