Trade in Indian Carpets

AS a result of the war the carpet industry in India has suffered among others the export of carpets of a particular fine quality to foreign countries has been restricted.

AS a result of the war the carpet industry in India has suffered among others the export of carpets of a particular fine quality to foreign countries has been restricted. The Bengal Chamber of Commerce some time ago drew the attention of the Government to the desirability of removing the prohibition in England. The industry is carried in Mirzapur and other towns and its success depends mainly on the trade with the United Kingdom. Carpets are also shipped to Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, but the business with those countries is on a restricted scale. The matter has been brought to the notice of the Government of India and the Hon’ble member in charge of the Commerce Department. It is understood that licenses for the importation of quantities of carpets has been given by the Board of Trade to certain houses. But obviously this has given no impetus for the trade and the attention of the Indian Office has been drawn to consider what could be done in the matter.
