Turning the Tables

IT is interesting to note how with all his ingenuity Mr. Pratt was completely outwitted at the meeting. He had thought that his reference to the Ahmedabad mill affair would have the effect of cornering the men. It was turned to a very different purpose by Mr. Vallabhbhai who followed him. Mr. Vallabhbhai said:-"He says he has a great regard for Mr. Gandhi (The Commissioner-Yes, of course). Mr. Gandhi has a great regard for Mr. Pratt who said on that occasion that the mill hands should always follow Mr. Gandhi and they would not fail to get justice. I also say likewise that if you follow Mr. Gandhi's advice in this matter you are sure to get justice at Mr. Pratt's hands. Here also the Commissioner may, if he so wishes, get a Committee appointed and we would willingly accept its decision as not inconsistent with our vows." Mr. Pratt could scarcely have bargained for so complete a turning of the tables.
