War Time Economies.

MR. C.J. Wilson, well known in financial circles, suggests in the columns of the Economist some practical ways of retrenching public expenditure. The first of these is that members of Parliament should, give up their salaries till the end of the war. The Economist endorses the view and asks: "Ought not at least those members of Parliament who are in public service and away from their Parliamentary duties to cease drawing Parliamentary pay? The suggestion is only natural and yet Government has been practically prevented from taking any action in this matter. Mr. Wilson's next suggestion is that the additions made "by thousands" to the Civil Service  should be cut off and a number of men tied to superfluous posts liberated for more useful work. This is a very important reform in which tax-payers are interested.
