A studio apartment with limited space should not be a deterrent to work on its décor. Skim through the internet and you will be flooded with ideas of how to go about it. While you can follow some, just ensure each décor choice complements the space available. Furniture must not be voluminous, upholstery should be light, and lamps should only adorn the walls…here are some more décor tips.

Rework the plan

Unlike decorating a huge space, where you can be liberal with the size and volume of the furniture and other accessories, a smaller space demands attention to the minutest details. Consider various aspects while planning floor layout, like the size of each piece of furniture, colour of the walls, drapes, equipment and more importantly, storage. A well thought-out floor plan will mean optimum utilisation of space.

Colour it light

Colour all the walls in one shade. Keep it same for the ceiling as well. The trick helps create illusion of space. Experimenting with colours in a small space can be jarring for the eyes. Also opt for lighter tones. Pick from beige, grey, off-white or white. While a wall in a dark shade in contrast with the other three walls of a room is a popular trend, but it is best avoided in a restricted area of one-bedroom apartment. The room may look cramped and you certainly won’t want that.

Bright side

Flooring done in a single shade throughout will lend the room a neat and chic look. If you like marbled floor, pick a shade of white. Also a standard wooden floor will be a safe alternative. Since space is limited, use the ceiling to experiment with lighting, which means don’t use floor lamps, rather opt for pennants, chandeliers and drop-down lights. These work as interesting accessories without encroaching on the ground space.

Sleek and simple

The key to picking furniture for a small space is opting for functional and practical pieces. Keep it minimal, yet comfortable. Ensure it serves multiple purposes. A couch must double as a bed. We do get models that can be customised according to an individual’s needs.

Instead of a traditional sofa-set, go for a couch that can be used as armchairs too. Less volume makes the room look spacious and it will also be easy to rearrange furniture whenever you want change in your room’s setting. A set of nesting tables is always handy to pull out and stow away. Consider glass-centered coffee tables & side tables. A twist to the dining table with a mix of chairs and a bench is visually lighter as compared to traditional all-chair dining table.

Store well

Storage is the most important aspect of doing up a small space. Preplan your storage requirements and incorporate solutions in furniture like chest of drawers and ottomans. Overhead floating shelves on top of doors can store a lot of books and memorabilia. A bed with side pull-out drawers can accommodate shoes and other extras that are easily accessible.
