Wayde van Niekerk

South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk ran the fastest single lap in history to win the 400m gold in 43.03 seconds and break Michael Johnson's 17-year-old world record on Sunday. The 24-year-old world champion got off to a flier to better American Johnson's 1999 mark of 43.18 seconds.

Almaz Ayana

The Ethiopian smashed a 23-year-old world record to win the greatest-ever women’s 10,000m. Ayana clocked 29 minutes 17.45 seconds, an incredible 14 seconds inside the 29:31.78 set by China's Wang Junxia in 1993. No woman had gone under 30 minutes in the last seven years, but the first four all did in this race, and the first 13 finishers ran the best time of their lives, including several national records.

Simone Biles

The petite American gymnast stamped her class and authority at the Rio Games. She became only the fifth woman to win four gold at the same Olympics, joining Hungarian Agnes Keleti (1956), Soviet Larissa Latynina (1956), Czech Vera Caslavska (1968) and Romanian Ecaterina Szabo (1984).

CONTROVERSIES

No hand shake

Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby was sent home from Rio after refusing to shake the hand of Israeli Or Sasson following the end of their bout. El Shehaby, who was sent home by his own team, lost the fight on Friday and was reprimanded by the IOC for his actions. The athlete said he did not want to shake hands with an Israeli, nor was he obliged to do so under judo rules, but the IOC said his behaviour went against the rules and spirit of the Olympic Games and the rules of fair play.

Doping accusations

Doping controversies have plagued this year’s swimming competitions after Australian Mack Horton called his rival and fellow Olympic swimming gold medallist Sun Yang a “drug cheat”, and US gold medallist Lily King criticised Russia's twice-banned swimmer Yulia Efimova. Sun was revealed two years ago to have secretly served a three-month suspension for using a banned stimulant. Efimova was only allowed to compete at the Games after winning an appeal against a ban for a previous doping offence.

Not ready for a ride

The Lebanese Olympic team refused to ride on a bus with Israeli athletes travelling to the Games’ opening ceremony in Rio. The Lebanese team were allegedly on a bus waiting to set off for the Maracana Stadium on Friday evening, when the Israeli team arrived and also attempted to board the vehicle but the Lebanese squad didn’t allow them to board.

Brazilian women's rugby player Isadora Cerullo melted hearts when she accepted a marriage proposal from her girlfriend at the medals ceremony for the first Olympic rugby sevens competition on Monday. A tearful Cerullo accepted and, with no ring, 28-year-old Enya tied a ribbon to her finger. “As soon as I knew she was in the squad, I thought I have to make this special,” Enya told BBC Sport shortly afterwards. “I know rugby people are amazing and they would embrace it.”
