Continuing with its drive against adulterated sweets and milk products, the Food Safety Authority raided several places in the city and confiscated tonnes of milk fat (mawa).

The supply of adulterated milk products from neighbouring towns of Saharanpur and Meerut increases before Holi. Following this, a team of the Food Safety Authority has been on high alert for the past few days. “We confiscated 1.5 quintals of milk fat (mawa) from the Asharodi check point, which we have destroyed,” said Anuj Thapliyal, officer of the Food Safety Authority.

In Dehradun, most of the milk is supplied from the neighbouring towns of Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar and Meerut. “The quality of milk supplied from outside is not up to the mark. We have been maintaining constant vigil as milk supply from these sources increases during festivals,” said Thapliyal.

The team also randomly checked various shops located in the city. On inspection, helpers at a sweets shop on the Chakrata Road were not found properly dressed and were asked to wear gloves and aprons as mandated in the Food Safety Act.

Thapliyal said in a mixture of any two edible vegetable oils, the percentage of edible oil should not be less than 20 per cent. “However, during festivals, oil sold is adulterated and packaging too does not carry the amount of blended oil. In most samples tested, the blended oil percentage is less than the prescribed norm,” he added.
