50 schools felicitated for environment education

DEHRADUN: More than 50 schools of the city were felicitated at a function organized by the Waste Warriors, a local voluntary group, for being part of Microsoft Create to inspire the environment education school programme at a function held at Welham Boys’ School here.

More than 50 schools of the city were felicitated at a function organized by the Waste Warriors, a local voluntary group, for being part of Microsoft Create to inspire the environment education school programme at a function held at Welham Boys’ School here.

The felicitation was the final event of the programme that began in September 2015. The programme is a teacher-training programme, which provides teachers with a revolutionary curriculum, to give them ideas on how they can teach their students about environmental sustainability in a hands-on and creative way.

The success of the programme was celebrated by awarding all schools that completed as well as participated in the programme. Teachers and principals, and a few select students were invited to represent their school at the event. A total of 13 schools were awarded the certificate of participation, 28 the certificate of completion while 14 schools were awarded the certificate of completion for exemplary schools for completing all 14 tool kits based on various environmental topics.

Prizes, donated by the Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board, were awarded to the schools. All prizes were eco-friendly and included beautiful diaries made with recycled paper by the Purkal Stree Shakti Samiti, and Irwinite Alumni Society, as well as baskets made from recycled newspaper.

Doon International School won the award for collecting the highest amount of e-waste. Doon Sarla Academy won the award for the best implementation of tool kits. Three schools were given awards in the best community outreach category for inspiring their surrounding communities to take action on environmentally sustainable living, including Shri Kalawati, Universal Academy and Flower Dale School. The top-prize of most environmentally sustainable schools was awarded to Ebenezer School, Doon Cambridge School and Himalayan Public School.

Army School (Clement Town), Flower Dale, SGRR (Patel Nagar) and Sri Kalawati were also specially invited to perform on topics that varied in nature, including water and fuel conservation, and preserving our biodiversity.
