Uttarakhand capital Dehradun is placed poorly at 26th position among the 28 capital cities surveyed for Swachh Bharat rankings. Karnataka capital Bengaluru tops the list, followed by Kerala capital Thiruvananthapuram while Sikkim capital Gangtok stands third.

The survey conducted during 2014-15 was commissioned by the Union Ministry of Urban Development as required under the National Sanitation Policy of 2008. Rajasthan capital Jaipur and Bihar capital Patna were the two capital cities figuring below Dehradun at 27th and 28th positions, respectively.

Inclusive of state capitals, a total of 476 class I cities in 31 states and Union Territories, each having a population of above one lakh, were surveyed for assessing sanitation practices on a set of parameters, including open defecation, solid waste management, waste water treatment, drinking water quality, surface water quality of water bodies and mortality due to water-borne diseases.
