MUSSOORIE: A leopard cat cub was found dead on the Camel’s Back road near Nirankari Satsang Bhawan here today.

A leopard cat cub was found dead on the Camel’s Back road near Nirankari Satsang Bhawan here today.

The locals initially thought that it was a cub of a leopard as they had witnessed a female leopard with her two cubs roaming around Camel’s Back Road a few days back. A forest team rushed to the spot and confirmed it as the cub of leopard cat. The forest officials took the body of the cat in its possession and sent it for the post-mortem.

This is the second death of a leopard cat in the past one year while more than three leopard cats have died in past five years.

Man held with leopard skin

Dehradun: The Special Task Force (STF) arrested a person with leopard pelt here today. Identified as Teekandra Singh alias Tika of Chayuda village, Chamoli, the accused was arrested from a private hotel.

The police had got a tip-off about the accused who was putting up at the hotel for the past two days to finalise a deal with some customer. The accused reportedly told the police that he had trapped and killed the leopard in dense forest of Joshimath in the Chamoli district last month.

Special Task Force SSP P Renuka Devi has formed several police teams, led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Santosh Shah, to tighten the noose around poachers in the city. The cost of the seized leopard pelt in the international market is said to be Rs 10 lakh. A case under relevant Section of the Wildlife (Protection) Act has been registered against the accused.
