State to host talk on climate change in Nov

Dehradun, October 27

Uttarakhand will be the first state to host a series of consultations on the issue of climate change science and adaptation measures in the Himalayas.

The programme is part of the Indian Himalayas Climate Adaptation Programme (IHCAP) of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Centre for Media Studies (CMS). Almora will be the venue for the first such consultations with the intelligentsia that is slated to take place in the first week of November.

The series of consultations will take place over the next two years in Uttarakhand, Sikkim, West Bengal, Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.

“The Indian Himalayan region is one of the most vulnerable mountain systems in the world. If effective measures are taken in time, experts believe it may be possible to prevent further degradation of the ecosystem,” said PN Vasanti, Director General, CMS in a statement issued today.

She said senior scientists, policymakers and journalists working on environment in the region would be part of the consultations. — TNS
