Chidanand Saraswati, head of Parmarth Niketan Ashram, said it is the duty of everyone to conserve water. He was addressing a function to commemorate World Water Conservation Day held in Rishikesh today.
He said it was a matter of concern that residents living in remote and hilly areas were forced to traverse several kilometers to bring water fro domestic use. He said collective efforts should be made to check water pollution in the country.
He spoke on the need to stop misuse of water. He said a large number of infants were dying after drinking polluted potable water. He lamented that despite the fact that 70 per cent of the earth is covered with water, people did not get clean water to drink. He said the government should take strict action against those found guilty of polluting the Ganga. A workshop on toilet construction training for women was also organised.
Abha Saraswati, Bhagwati Saraswati, Nandini Tripathi, Vinod, Tara, Vishal Bhatt, Rajesh and Pooja Negi and students from different schools attended the function.
