The Department of Social Welfare has stopped disbursement of pension to 60,000 beneficiaries, including senior citizens, widows and disabled persons after discrepancies were found in data pertaining to those who received the pension.
The department will verify the names of the beneficiaries from the Central pool. It was alleged that several beneficiaries had multiple pension cards.
Both the Centre and the state contribute towards the pension scheme.
Around Rs 800 crore is spent annually on the pension scheme by the government.
