The 15th edition of the three-day Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament held at Nainital Raj Bhawan Golf Club concluded today with Governor KK Paul giving away prizes to the winners of various categories.
Dinesh Panwar was declared the overall winner of the tournament and the runner up was Nusrat Abbas. Col (retd) SL Shah was the super veteran runner-up while Wing Commander (retd) HS Bedi won the trophy of super veteran.
Sainik School, Ghodakhal, won the runners-up trophy for the inter-school golf tournament held earlier this month while the winner of the tournament was Government Inter College, Nainital.
In the boys’ category (15 years to 17 years), Deepak Kumar of Government Inter College was the winner while in the girls’ category (15 to 17 years), Sahila Abdullah from Mohan Lal Shah Bal Vidya Mandir, Nainital, was declared the winner.
Paul congratulated the winners and participants and said the tournament had evolved due to their efforts. “The future of golf is safe,” he said.
The Governor said the Golf Club, with help from the Indian Golf Union, will popularise the game on a large scale. The Raj Bhawan Golf Club is giving free of cost training to students.
He said efforts were underway to ensure that golf did not remain confined to any one age group or any particular section of the society. “It should become everyone’s sport and talented young golfers should be encouraged.” The tournament also famililarised golfers from all over the country with the beauty and cultural heritage of Uttarakhand, Paul added.
