Tehri District Magistrate Yugal Kishore Pant was appalled at the lack of cleanliness and unhygienic condition prevailing in Navodaya Vidyalaya at Jajal village in Tehri during an inspection visit yesterday.

The District Magistrate lambasted the headmaster and teachers for the prevailing condition in the school and directed officials to ensure proper hygiene and cleanliness in the school.

Students informed the Pant that they were not served items listed in the school food menu and did not receive the milk in 2014-15. Appalled by the revelation, the District Magistrate directed the officials concerned to stop the one month payment of canteen contractor as penalty for not serving the items listed in the school menu.

The District Magistrate also found that students were being imparted education in the residential block and not in the classes. He was also told that no health checkup camp was held in the school during the past two months and no medicines were distributed to them for minor ailments. The DM tasted the food and found excessive salt being put in cereals served to students and termed it as hazardous for the health of students.

The closets of labs were locked during the inspection and when asked headmaster CL Sachan said it was due to unavailability of space in the school.

Pant also inspected various documents and directed the teaching staff to reach school timely and teach the students with due diligence. He found flaws in the timetable and was told that the school was facing the problem due to lack of adequate residential space for the female teachers.

Pant said the school was being run in a makeshift school. The new school building with complete facilities is near completion at Deval, near Narendar Nagar block, and the students will be shifted in the new building from next session. Three teachers Satish Lekhwar, Dwarika Prasad, Mahesh Uniyal were found to be present in the school during the inspection. There are around 158 students in the school.

Navodaya Vidyalaya scheme was the brainchild of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and around 13 vidyalayas were established in state for imparting secondary and senior secondary education in the country for students of weaker strata.
