Chief Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh has directed the district administration of Nainital to take action against people allowing the rainy water to sweep through the sewerage system.

During his visit to Nainital, the Chief Secretary was told that most of the rainy water instead of being used for recharging the water level at Naini Lake was being allowed to flow through the sewerage system. After this, Utpal Kumar Singh asked the Executive Engineer (Irrigation) to take stern measures for stopping flow of water into the sewerage system.

Singh has also sought feedback from the residents, NGOs and officials for preserving and conserving the Naini Lake, whose water level has been decreasing.

He also asked the local authorities to free the catchment area of Naini Lake from encroachments and said that no construction would be allowed in the green belt area. Local environmentalist Dr Ajay Rawat said to revive the Naini Lake, the government will have to work to revive the nearby Sukha Tal and its catchment area.
