Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ramnagar, today sentenced four poachers to three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 each for trying to poach a tiger after entering the Corbett Tiger Reserve last year.
The sentence came after the convicts, who were taken into custody after they were found roaming suspiciously at the Jhirna range of the CTR on May 8, 2014. They admitted that they had tried to kill the tiger by installing a trap at Jaspur block of Jhiirna range of the CTR.
“The poachers, later produced in court by forest officials, admitted they had entered the forest to poach a tiger by means of trapping the animal. A case under various sections of Wildlife Protection Act was registered against them. The magistrate today delivered the sentence after looking into testimonies of witnesses and proofs against the culprits,” said Lalit Tiwari, government counsellor at the court.
