Dehradun, July 6

Intermittent rains for more than two days has exposed the functioning of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (PMC) with most of the areas in the city facing the waterlogging problem. The DMC office has been flooded with calls and the civic body now faces a challenge to flush out the water.

Notably, the DMC had claimed that it was ready for the monsoon.

Residential and commercial areas of the city are severely hit by blocked drains as a result of which rainwater has accumulated on roads and even entered shops and houses at a few areas in the city.

Bumper-to-bumper traffic jams were today witnessed at major inter-crossings in the city. The worst-affected areas were Rajpur road, Clock Tower, Chakrata Road, Patel Nagar, Araghar, Dharampur, Subhash Road, Gandhi Road and Saharanpur Road. Additional traffic policemen were deployed in these areas to bring the situation under control.

Residents said the dumping of garbage in drains, the lack of maintenance of drains and encroachment were the main reasons behind waterlogging in different colonies of the city. They complained that potholed roles were posing a threat to the lives of commuters.

On the other hand, the officials concerned said stern instructions had been issud to carry out repair work in the affected colonies.

Meanwhile, several areas of the capital city faced erratic power supply since early this morning. Although the power department’s technical staff was immediately sent to the affected areas to correct the faults, the testing of transmission lines continued till late in the evening.

Power supply was resumed to most of the colonies by the evening.

The state meteorological centre has forecast moderate to heavy rainf in different parts of the state.
