India must address bilateral issues: Nepalese Ambassador

Nepalese Ambassador designate Deep Kumar Upadhyay today launched a book titled “Gorkha—Society and Politics”, brought out by the Centre for Reforms, Development and Justice (CRDJ), New Delhi.

The book is authored by Brig CS Thapa (retd). Upadhyay hoped that by re-visiting the Indo-Nepal treaty of 1950, the long-standing irrigation and power concerns of Nepal would be addressed.

He called for redress of all issues between India and Nepal in a positive manner. He said an expert group would discuss on the 1950 treaty and give its recommendations within three years after holding consultations with stakeholders.

He said 70 per cent of trade in the Himalayan nation was dependent on India due to geographical reasons.

Centre for Reforms, Development and Justice, president and senior journalist Siddharth Mishra said the book Gorkha – Society and Politics, highlighted a community that was not only known for courage and chivalry but were sweet by nature.

He said book intends to reach out to the people and seek their opinion. He said the book was the first assignment on part of CRDJ and it looks forward for many more such ventures.

Author Brig CS Thapa said the book refers to three brothers from Nepal, first who joined the Nepalese army, the second one who joined the British army and the third, who went to India and joined the Indian Army. He called for protection of Gorkha identity and stressed for looking beyond the proposed demand of Gorkhaland. A large number of people from Dehradun attended the launch ceremony.
