Mussoorie, September 2

Chief Minister Harish Rawat paid homage to six martyrs of the statehood movement, who were killed in police firing in Mussoorie, by offering floral tributes on their portraits at the Saheed Sthal here today. He inaugurated several projects for the development of Mussoorie on the occasion.

Besides Harish Rawat, Urban Development Minister Pritam Panwar, Sports Minister Dinesh Aggarwal, State Andolankari Parishad president Dhirendar Pratap, state president of the Tourism Promotion and Culture Preservation Jot Singh Gunsola, and Municipal Council president Manmohan Singh Mall also paid floral tribute to the martyrs. Martyrs Balbir Singh Negi (22), Belmati Chauhan (48), Dhanpat Singh, Hansa Dhanai (45), Madan Mohan Mamgain, and Rai Singh Bangari (54) were killed in police firing, which also led to the death of DSP Umakant Tripathi in Mussoorie on September 2, 1994.

Later the Chief Minister unveiled an underground power cable project on the Mall Road and also inaugurated a high speed Wi-Fi Internet service started in association with Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL). With the start of this Wi-Fi service, Mussoorie became the first hill station in Uttarakhand to enter the digital age, said senior RJIL officials. The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone of a beautification project at Jharipani Fall and Khatta Pani. He said a proposed project for drawing drinking water from the Yamuna had been shelved and instead a project drawing water from Kempty Falls for Mussoorie at a cost of Rs 35 crore had been initiated. The detailed project report (DPR) was being made for the project that was likely to cost Rs 35 crore. The Chief Minister took a dig at the BJP for raising petty issues and trying to corner him. He said he was not afraid of false claims and charges levelled by the BJP and advised the opposition to raise development issues instead of useless matters.

Harish Rawat said the state was progressing on the path of development with only Goa ahead in list of developing states. He added the government now was focusing on improving the condition of 20 lakh people who were still bereft of basic amenities.

Pritam Panwar said the state government was also planning to check forced migration from the state and formulate a policy in this regard. Manmohan Singh Mall demanded parking facilities, an auditorium, upgrade of ropeway from Purkul village for Mussoorie.

Former state Assembly Speaker Harbans Kapoor, former Cabinet minister Khajaan Das, senior BJP leaders Ravinder Jugran, Trivendar Panwar, and other leaders also remembered the martyrs.

CM’s helicopter lands on third attempt

Chief Minister Harish Rawat faced problems to reach Mussoorie due to foggy weather today. The helicopter took several ariel rounds and landed on its third attempt. Students, who were lined up on both sides of the road, had to wait for several hours. They had to run from one end to other due to incorrect information about the arrival of the Chief Minister Harish Rawat. The Guru Nanak Fifth Centenary School students were also not allowed to sing a song prepared for the occasion while cultural programmes were being held at the Shaheed Sthal. Workers of the Aam Aadmi Party raised slogans against the state government for politicising the event.
