Dehradun, June 23

After more than 20 years, the state government has revised the rates charged by the government for use of government vehicles for personal use by bureaucrats and heads of departments.

The move is being seen as an exercise aimed at curbing unnecessary expenditure and misuse of official cars.

According to the revision effected a few days ago, the officials will have to pay Rs 2,000 monthly for the use of government vehicles for personal use. Officials are allowed to use government vehicles for personal use for a distance of 200 km.

Earlier, these rates were fixed between Rs 500 for the use of cars and Rs 400 for the use of jeeps per month.

These rates were fixed according to rules that were applicable in Uttar Pradesh for the use of government vehicles for personal use. The officials could cover a distance of 200 km through their government vehicles, for personal work.

Though the move has come very late, nevertheless it is bound to curb frivolous use of official vehicles. Since the creation of the new state of Uttarakhand, no efforts had been made to amend or revise the rates.
