Mussoorie, December 21

Residents of Zaffar Hall and shopkeepers of Mall Road opposed widening of the road here today.

They created a ruckus at the construction site and stopped the work completely. The affected residents also met Municipal Council (MC) executive officer RK Dayal and presented a memorandum demanding the work be stopped.

They alleged that it was being done only to assist the entry of vehicles of a few hoteliers. They said the road was being cut with the help of JCB machines without their consent, which was illegal.

Prabha Sharma, the owner of a house above the construction site, said her house would be affected because of the construction work as side walls were being broken with the help of JCB machines.

The residents said the work was being done at the behest of local ward member Vinod Semwal. They threatened that if the work was not stopped immediately, they would register an FIR against the executing agency. Semwal said the road was being widened on the demand of nearby residents so that emergency services such as ambulance could be provided to their colony.

He said if residents did not want the road to be widened, the work would be stopped forthwith.

Former MC ward member Nand Lal, Ramesh Khanduri, Meera Chaturvedi, Pooran Juyal, Chandra Prakash Godiyal, and Rajesh Mamgain took part in the protest.
