Ghats on the banks of the Ganga in Haridwar will be cleaned under the Namami Gange project of the Central Government. A sum of Rs 21 crore will be spent on cleaning the ghats, including the famous Har-ki-Pauri.

The Haridwar Municipal Corporation has already prepared a plan for cleaning and renovating the ghats.

Until now, the Ganga Sabha, Bharat Scouts and Guides, Sewa Samiti and 50 municipal workers were entrusted the task with cleaning the ghats on the Ganga. Maintaining cleanliness on the ghats has been a challenge as the manpower required for the job always fell short given the heavy rush of pilgrims from across of the country at most of the ghats.

As many as 385 sanitary workers and 15 supervisors will be deployed under the project to ensure cleanliness at the ghats. The money will also be utilised to purchase equipment required for cleaning such as single disc scrubbers, pressure jetting machines, dustbins and hand carts. Benches will also be installed at the ghats for the convenience of the pilgrims.
