Dehradun, October 28

Come Divali and adulteration in food items in markets of Dehradun peaks. Like previous years, the Society of Pollution Environment Conservation Scientists (SPECS) conducted an survey to check adulteration levels in food items in Dehradun and found that 74 per cent of the food products being sold in Dehradun markets for Divali festivities are adulterated. Of 218 samples collected, 163 were found adulterated. Mustered oil and roli were found 100 per cent adulterated. Among the products that were found most adulterated include milk (80 per cent), mava (75 per cent), paneer (70 per cent), ladd0 (80 per cent), milk cake (70 per cent), batasha (60 per cent), gulab jamun (90 per cent), kaju barfi (66 per cent), biscuits (50 per cent), mustard oil (100 per cent), refined oil (70 per cent), turmeric (80 per cent) and red chilly had 90 per cent adulteration.

Sweets such as raj bhog had 60 per cent adulteration and contained metanil yellow dye. This dye can cause ulcer and cancer. This dye was also found in petha methai. A total of 80 per cent adulteration was found in laddo due to synthetic colour such as metanil yellow. In bakery products, around 50 per cent adulteration was found due to substandard maida and low grade fat.

According to Dr Brijmohan Sharma, secretary of SPECS, these adulterants can cause diseases of skin, stomach and liver and kidney failure. Volunteers of Just Open Yourself Society (JOY) Ram Tirath, Dr Ajay Joshi, Shankar Dutt, Nitesh Kaushik, Saumaya Rauthan and Prashant Sharma actively participated in the campaign.
