Dehradun, August 21

Chief Minister TS Rawat has announced hike in subsidy to beekeepers from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore. Addressing a workshop here, the CM said a laboratory would also be set up for testing the quality of honey.

He said, “Certified organic honey is in great demand all over the world. If we set up a laboratory here, it will help the farmers sell certified, pure honey. This will increase their income.”

The state government will launch multipurpose scheme for farmers on August 25. The scheme entails offering loan of Rs 1 lakh to farmers at an interest rate of 2 percent. The scheme also figured in the BJP’s vision document released prior to the 2017 elections.

A total of 4,600 farmers are engaged in beekeeping activity, while the state produces 2,083 metric tonne honey annually.
