Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government-in-exile Dr Lobsang Sangay has expressed gratitude towards India for its support to the Tibetan community and being a perfect host to the Tibetans. Sangay was in Mussoorie for the Gyathon Celebration marking the 80th birth year of the 14th Dalai Lama. He thanked India also for playing an important role in providing quality education to Tibetan students.
Dr Sangay, along with Ngawang Rabgyal, secretary, Department of Education, was welcomed by students and staff of Tibetan Homes Foundation, Central School for Tibetans and other Tibetan outfits here today.
Dr Sangay offered the traditional scarf on a portrait of the Dalai Lama. The audience sang National Anthems of Tibet and India on the occasion. This was followed by serving of sweetened rice and butter tea to all.
Gendun Rinchen, assistant secretary of the Tibetan Homes Foundation, welcomed the chief guest. The students enthralled the audience with a Tibetan Opera extract, traditional dance and a group song.
Dr Sangay encouraged the students from the Tibetan community at the Tsering Dolma Auditorium of the Tibetan Homes Foundation to accept challenges and reach greater heights in academics. He also spoke of his journey from Darjeeling to the present role. He emphasised on the role of teachers and administrators in the field of education.
Dr Sangay also gave away awards and citations to students who had excelled in academics, sports and culture. The festivities will go on till October 4 when the students will participate in various events being organised in the honour of the Dalai Lama in Mussoorie.
