Tiger population on the rise in U’khand

The tiger population is increasing in the state with both Corbett Tiger Reserve and Rajaji Tiger Reserve registering a rise in the big cat population as revealed in the latest tiger census report.

The report was part of Phase IV monitoring of the two tiger reserves of Uttarakhand as per the National Tiger Conservation Authority’s guidelines.

As per the latest 2016-17 tiger census report, figures of which were released yesterday, Corbett Tiger Reserve has at least 208 individual tigers and six individual tiger cubs while this figure was just 163 individual tigers as per the last (2014) tiger census report. Similarly, the tiger population at Rajaji Tiger Reserve has increased from the last census figure of 16 tigers to now to 34 individual tigers and five cubs.

Corbett, which has a reputation of being a high tiger density area in Asia, has minimum of 208 adult tigers and six cubs. Of this, 109 tigers were recorded in Kalagarh. In Ramnagar which is a territorial forest division of Corbett, 99 tigers and six cubs were recorded in the census. Similarly, in Rajaji Tiger Reserve, 34 tigers and five cubs were recorded.

A total of 535 camera traps were used in Corbett on a rotational basis for the census that was carried out in time period of two stretches — the first from November 28, 2016, to January 21, 2017, and the second from January 25, 2017, to March 19, 2017. A total of 3,892 pictures of tigers were clicked through camera traps.  Further, at Rajaji Tiger Reserve, a total of 562 camera traps were installed and a total of 620 pictures of tigers clicked.

Releasing the tiger census figures yesterday, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said it was a matter of honour for the state that the tiger population had registered a remarkable increase amply revealing that sincere works were being done in the state for tiger conservation.
