Eminent veteran environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna has said trees should not be felled for development purposes. In case, deforestation takes place, new trees should be planted at least ten times of the number felled.

Bahuguna was speaking at the concluding day of the three-day International Model United Nations (IMUN) Conference held at the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) here today.

The panel discussions were organised on the two issues of “India’s Energy Policy in wake of declining crude prices” and “Potential and Challenges of Solar Energy in Uttarakhand”.

The panellists for deliberations of the national issue were Dr Kirit Parikh, former member of the Planning Commission of India; Ashok Bhattacharya, Editor of Business Standard; Dr Umakant Panwar, Principal Secretary of Energy in Uttarakhand; Utpal Ghosh, president of the UPES; and SN Verma, Managing Director, UJVNL.

Earlier, Radha Raturi, Principal Secretary, Uttarakhand, inaugurated the event yesterday. Over 200 students from national and international universities, including 60 students from various countries, including Afghanistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Mexico, South Sudan, Angola, Gabon, Kenya, Sudan and Chad, participated in the event.
