Waste Warriors, a local NGO, conducted two clean-up drives in Dalanwala on Saturday. Nine teachers from Maple Bear School accompanied Waste Warrior CEO Jodie Underhill and three members of Waste Warriors staff to clean a section of Circular Road. They were later joined by resident GC Johri, who not only helped to clean up but also made a donation of Rs 500 in support of their efforts. Litter grabbers were used to remove garbage from the deep gutters, with separate bags being used for recyclable and non-recyclable waste. Leaves were put into separate bags, ready to be composted. The group collected 237 kg organic waste, 45 kg non-recyclable and 5 kg recyclable waste. Students of the primary school have made cards requesting residents to keep the area clean. These will be distributed on Monday.

As many as 11 pupils and two teachers from Colonel Brown School, led by project assistant Shraddha Zende, cleaned the area near their school and enthusiastically collected 20 kg non-recyclable and 11 kg recyclable waste including broken glass. The clean-up drive highlighted the extensive amount of litter that accumulates around ice-cream vendors’ carts. The NGO will encourage school principals to speak to their students and ice-cream sellers who sell their wares outside their school gates, about the importance of using dustbins. Col Brown School students will also be reaching out to the community to raise awareness among ice-cream vendors and their customers.

The clean-ups were organised as part of the Dalanwala Transformation Project launched in December 2014 in collaboration with the Dalanwala Residents Welfare Association. As part of the programme, residents and schools are being encouraged to maintain cleanliness of their perimeter in a bid to clean up the colony. Waste Warriors employs three full-time waste workers to clean up on a daily basis and organises regular clean-up drives with local schools and a monthly community clean-up on the first Sunday of every month. The project is funded by donations from local residents and well-wishers of the project.
