Conservative party’s Andrezj Duda is new Polish Prez

Warsaw: Andrezj Duda of the PIS Conservative party has been elected the new president of Poland, defeating incumbetnt Bronislaw Komorowski. According to the preliminary reports Duda has got 53 percent votes.

According to the preliminary reports Duda has got 53 percent votes. The sitting president conceded defeat and congratulated the 43-year-old Duda. Duda had won the first round on 10 May by only 1 percent. In the second round he comprehensively defeated Komorowski. IANS 

China busts 181 terror groups in Xinjiang

Beijing: China has busted 181 terror groups in Muslim-majority Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, authorities said on Monday, a year after the controversial anti- terror campaign was launched in the province bordering countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan. As of April 30 this year, 181 terror gangs were destroyed, with 96.2% being thwarted at the planning phase. PTI

Indian-origin voters played ‘decisive role’ in UK polls 

London: Indian-origin voters in the UK played a decisive role in Prime Minister David Cameron-led Conservatives winning the elections, with one million ethnic minority votes going in his favour, a post-poll survey said. Nearly 6,15,000 Indian-origin voters were expected to vote in the May 7 elections with many expected to switch loyalties from Opposition Labour to the Conservative party, a research by British Future has found. Quake shakes buildings in Tokyo

Tokyo: A strong quake shook buildings in Tokyo on Monday, setting off alarms and temporarily bringing the city’s subway system to halt. Scientists said there was no risk of a tsunami from the quake, which had a magnitude of 5.3, according to the US Geological Survey. The Japan Meteorological Agency earlier put it at 5.6. PTI

Woman shoots herself in head while taking selfie

Moscow: A Russian woman was critically wounded after accidentally shooting herself in the head with a pistol while posing for a selfie. The woman found a 9mm handgun left behind by a security guard at her office in Moscow and decided to take a selfie while posing with it. Holding the gun close to her head, the woman pulled the gun’s trigger and shot herself through the temple. PTI

US fighter jets escort Air France flight after threat 

New York: An Air France passenger jet flying from Paris to New York was escorted by two US fighter planes for the last stretch of the trip on Monday because of a bomb threat against the flight, the airline and US officials said. Hours after it landed and was searched, the FBI said no bomb had been found and it declared the Airbus plane clear, CNN reported. AFP

B’desh bans Islamist group linked to blogger killings

Dhaka: Bangladesh on Monday banned an Islamist militant outfit, Ansarullah Bangla Team, that is believed to be behind the gruesome hacking deaths of three secular bloggers in recent months that have evoked outrage in the country and across the globe. The ABT was banned for its militant and anti-state activities with the home ministry publishing a circular in this regard. PTI
