Muslim girls must take swimming classes

Strasbourg (France): Muslim parents cannot refuse to send their daughters to mixed school-run swimming lessons, Europe’s rights top court found, ruling on a challenge by a Turkish-Swiss couple who argued the classes violated their beliefs. It ruled that the refusal by the Swiss city of Basel to exempt the couple’s two daughters from swimming lessons was justified by the need to promote the children’s social integration. — AFP

Washington: Four Indian-Americans are among the 102 chosen for the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. They are Pankaj Lal from Montclair State University, Kaushik Chowdhury from Northeastern University, Manish Arora from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Aradhna Tripati from University of California, Los Angeles. — PTI
