Statue of Liberty evacuated over suspicious package

New York: Visitors to the Statue of Liberty were evacuated from Liberty Island in New York Harbour on Friday after a report of a suspicious package, the US Park Police said, and law enforcement officials are investigating the site. The evacuation was ordered after a telephone bomb threat, according to CNN and the Wall Street Journal. A spokeswoman for the US Park Police said she could not confirm such a threat. Reuters

14 migrants killed on Macedonia railway track

Skopje (Macedonia) The Macedonian police say at least 14 migrants, believed to be from Afghanistan and Somalia, have died after being hit by a train as they walked along the tracks at night. They said the accident occurred at around 10:30 pm near the central Macedonian town of Veles, as the migrants followed the tracks to head north. The train was an express passenger train travelling from the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki to the Serbian capital of Belgrade. AP

Indian-origin soldier awarded President's Medal in Israel

Jerusalem: An Indian-origin soldier (22) with the Israeli army has been awarded the President’s Medal of Excellence for his outstanding service. Adiel Yosef, who immigrated to Israel from Mumbai four years ago, got the award for serving in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). PTI

Christie's to auction rare Amrita Sher-Gil self-portrait

London: An undiscovered self-portrait of eminent Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil will go under hammer here on June 10. The portrait, which dates back to 1931 and depicts one of India's most celebrated modern artists at the age of 18, will be up for sale in the annual South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art Sale at Christie's with a pre-sale estimate of 1 to 1.8 million pounds.
