London, September 22

London transport authorities announced on Friday they would not renew Uber's licence to operate in the city when it expires on September 30 for safety reasons, although it has three weeks to appeal.

Transport for London said Uber, whose licence expires on September 30, would be allowed to continue to operate while the appeals process was exhausted.

"Transport for London has concluded that Uber London Limited is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence," it said in a statement.

Uber said it would challenge a decision by London's transport regulator on Friday to strip it of its licence to operate from the end of the month.

"Transport for London and the Mayor have caved in to a small number of people who want to restrict consumer choice," Uber said in a statement. "We intend to immediately challenge this in the courts." AFP/ Reuters
