During a special drive against taxis and cabs, the Delhi Traffic Police have impounded 527 cabs for violation of permit conditions, verified 1,073 taxi stands and have challaned 3,851 drivers for various violations of permit conditions.
The police have constituted 106 checking teams to check drunk driving. The Traffic Police issued challans to 239 persons for drunk driving and have impounded 193 vehicles.
In its continuing special drive against taxis and cabs for the past week, the police conducted random checking of taxis carrying women, in which 1,423 vehicles were checked. This exercise will be continued in future as well, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla.
Meanwhile, in a letter written to the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, Rajdhani Tourist Driver Union suggested that transport companies should get verification of their drivers and send it to labour, transport departments and the police. Transport companies should issue identity cards to the drivers, GPS system must be installed in all commercial vehicles, mobile numbers of the drivers should be written on the licence, all transport companies should be registered with the government, drivers be given salary through cheques, ESI facility to drivers and once in a year mental check-up of the drivers should be done and logbook should be made must for the companies.
As per the Motor Transport Act, 1961, drivers should be given a duty of eight hours and maximum four hours over time, the police should check logbooks. Keeping in view the security of tourists, the tourist companies should be directed that they should hire vehicles of the companies that have got verification of their drivers.
