PU moots ban on outsiders’ vehicles

Taking a serious note of the recent eve-teasing case at Panjab University, a special committee constituted for this purpose has proposed a ban on the entry of vehicles of outsiders after 6:30 PM on the campus.

During a meeting chaired by Dean Student Welfare (Women) Nandita Singh with hostel wardens today, it was proposed that only vehicles with requisite stickers and students having university ID cards should be allowed entry after 6:30 pm.

Vice-president of the Student’s Council Snigdha Bawa also raised issues pertaining to various problems being faced by girl students of the university.

The members proposed that in case of any visitor, registration number of vehicle along with driver’s contact number, purpose of visit and the name of the person he/she wants to meet should be recorded in the register at all three entry gates to avoid any untoward incident on the campus.

Sources said it was decided that the proposal would be sent to the PU chief security officer for his approval.

Another decision taken at the meeting included constitution of sexual harassment and grievance cells in all girls’ hostels. Members of this cell will be two girls and warden of the hostel and one administrative staff member of the hostel.

Besides, cells will also be constituted in the hostels for counselling with two senior students of the hostels who will be nominated by the wardens. The DSW asked all wardens to submit the names of the committee members of both cells by Monday.

The sources said the wardens demanded that separate contact numbers should be allocated to them as their personal numbers were flashed on the website and on hostel boards, which create a lot of problem for them.

The issue about the installation of wire meshes on the top floor of hostels was also discussed at the meeting, in view of the recent protests by the student parties.

The DSW asked the wardens to interact with the inmates of the hostels on this issue so that the final decision could be taken on it.
