The Punjab unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) is up in arms against the registration of criminal cases against doctors on the charges of medical negligence.

Chandigarh, December 7

The Punjab unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) is up in arms against the registration of criminal cases against doctors on the charges of medical negligence.

Having more than 7,400 members, the state unit has alleged that the guidelines laid by the Supreme Court were not being followed while registering such cases. The apex court had stated that preliminary inquiry was a must before entertaining a private complaint alleging negligence against a doctor.

Punjab unit chairman Dr Sudhir Raj told the media here today: “Doctors are being painted as merchants of death… Once a case is registered, a doctor’s career is destroyed even if he is proved innocent in court.” — TNS
