Chandigarh, December 13

Weddings are a big affair. While things are spic and span on the D-day, the picture is altogether different after the function concludes.

This was evident at a park in Sector 28-A, which has been left in a deplorable condition by the organisers of a marriage party.

The park was booked by BS Johal from the Municipal Corporation (MC) for a function. However, the government property now presents a sorry state of affairs.

While trees in the park were pruned to make way for tents, the lights and the iron railings have also been damaged.

This has caused widespread resentment among residents, who raised the matter with the area councillor and the MC authorities today.

Following this, a team of civic body officials arrived at the spot to assess the damage done.

Sources said as many as 10 park lights had been damaged and some of them were uprooted; the railings at the boundary of the park were removed for bigger access and the trees were pruned.

The swings installed in the park were also removed from the park for the function.

The report on the damaged caused to the public property will be submitted to the MC authorities on Monday.

Area councillor Satinder Singh said, “The MC officials, including the Chief Engineer and Superintending Engineer, were informed about the incident. Area residents informed me about the damage done to the park. Appropriate action should be taken by the authorities”, said Singh.

On the other hand, Johal, who had booked the park for the function, said, “The property that was damaged will be repaired at the earliest. I have directed my staff to fix everything and some of the repairs have already been made.”

Johal said the function was held on December 6 and he had booked the park from December 3 to 10.

Meanwhile, an area resident said the MC authorities should impose heavy penalty on those damaging the public property to set a precedent for others.

“This is no way that after damaging public property, one gets it repaired and hence evades legal action,” said the area councillor.
