The National Conference (NC) today said it had filed a complaint with the Election Commission against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP for “hurling wild, unsubstantiated and defamatory accusations” at the party leaders.

The complaint has been filed by NC spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu.

“I, on behalf of the J&K National Conference, would like to draw your attention on successive violations of the mode code of conduct by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during his recent speeches in Jammu and Kashmir,” the letter written by Mattu to the ECI read.

The party had yesterday filed a similar complaint with the Election Commission against Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Mattu, in his complaint, has said the Prime Minister had “repeatedly” named the leadership of the National Conference “while raising wild, unsubstantiated allegations against them”.

“This, while a clear act of defamation, is also a violation of the model code of conduct. This is also a clear attempt to malign our respected leaders who are equal citizens of this country and have every right to defend themselves against such defamation,” the complaint said.

The party has requested the EC to take “immediate cognisance of the violations” and take “necessary action mandated under the relevant statutes” of the law.
