A week after a Chandigarh youth was shot dead at the marriage ceremony of his friend’s sister at Lehra Bet village near Makhu in Zira subdivision of Ferozepur, the police have yet to arrest the killer. Gulshan Dhiman, a resident of Sector 44, Chandigarh, had come to attend the marriage of his friend’s sister on the intervening night of December 11 and 12. He entered into a minor scuffle with some youths, who were reportedly drunk.

The bride’s cousin, identified as Ranjit Singh of Ferozepur, fired shots into the air from his revolver. One of the shots hit Gulshan in the abdomen. He was rushed to a hospital in Ludhiana but succumbed to the injury. Initially, the police believed that the youth was killed in the celebratory fire. After family members of the deceased alleged that he had been murdered, a criminal case was registered under Sections 302 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act against the accused youth.

The Zira DSP, Hardip Singh Boparai, said the police had conducted several raids at the accused’s residence.
