Congress councillors have served a 10-day ultimatum to Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria and top brass of the Municipal Corporation to convene the general house by December 13.

They said if the meeting was not convened, they would go on a hunger strike.

At a meeting of the party councillors, convened by group leader Hem Raj Aggarwal and chairman Balkar Singh Sandhu, it was stated that as the general house had not been held for the past nine months, development of the city had come to a halt.

Spokesperson for the councillors Parminder Mehta said various civic issues could not be addressed as the Mayor had failed to convene the meeting.

The councillors said residents were harried as they were getting inflated bills of arrears of water and sewerage charges. Rising dog bite cases, poor performance of A 2 Z Company, bad roads, non-functional streetlights and pathetic condition of green belts had been the bane, they added.

“The councillors have been denied their democratic right to raise issues of public interest in the general house meeting which has not been held for the past nine months,” said the councillors, adding that several assurances given by the Mayor and the MC Commissioner had failed to yield any good result.

The meeting was attended by serving and former councillors, including Jai Parkash, Sanjay Talwar, Rakesh Parashar, Sanjeev Sehgal, Manpreet Grewal, Pritpal Singh Ghayal, Gurmukh Singh Mithu, Harjinder Lally, Lally Grewal and Maharaj Singh Raji.
